Texans love football. But, although they are passionate about college and pro ball, it is the high school games that they are really fanatical about. Texas High School Football season begins in August and doesn't end until December. During the regular season, games are held at stadiums throughout the state and the whole town comes out to see their team play. During the playoffs, most of the games are held at larger, centrally located venues such as the AlamoDome in San Antonio, Texas Stadium in Dallas, Kyle Field in College Station, Memorial Stadium in Austin and Reliant Stadium in Houston. These late season games are attended by fans from across the state, not just those from participating schools.
Sports fans across the nation became aware of this fanaticism in 1990, when H.G. Bissinger wrote the book, Friday Night Lights, which chronicled the season of a Texas high school team.
In 2004 the movie Friday Night Lights was made based on the book. Coach Gaines' halftime speech to his team is considered one of the great movie speeches.
This video gives an idea of how the whole town shuts down for "the game" and of the atmosphere in the stadium. The players are teenage students, but this is not just a friendly game, it's serious. The song is Your Hand in Mine by Explosions in the Sky.
